On 31 March, 2021, our membership suffered a devasting blow with the workplace death of brother Ryan Coughlan, a member of IAM Local 99. Ryan’s sudden passing shocked and saddened all knew him.

In the ongoing recognition of Ryan and his family, IAM members where Ryan worked (Finning, Edmonton) put on a memorial Show-and-Shine Day on Saturday, 25 June, 2022. The day included the opening of the memorial site built entirely by our members to honour Ryan’s memory. This location allows for reflection and peaceful moments to remember Ryan and what he meant to everyone. The ongoing plan is to recognize this day every year.

The pictures are of members, guests, Ryan’s brother (Lee Coughlan sitting on the bench) and Ryan’s family. You can see all the events – BBQ, dump truck rides for the kids, car crush with a D11 bulldozer, bouncy play area for the kids, and of course the great classic cars on display.

Local 99 hopes the memorial will also serve to heighten awareness of health and safety in all IAM workplaces.
