Toronto, ON – Disclosure of financial penalties for not complying with the Greater Toronto Airport Authority’s (GTAA) new employee retention standards, is a stumbling block in bargaining talks between the IAM and Menzies Aviation.
Speaking to delegates at a two-day International Transport Federation (ITF) conference in Toronto, IAM Transportation District Lodge General Chairperson Mike Corrado said the new standards are design to stem the problem of employee turnover for service providers who practice contract flipping. “Service providers are constantly trying to undercut each other at Toronto’s Pearson Airport by cutting wages and benefits of the workers,” explained Corrado. “But now it’s come back to bite them, they can’t retain workers because each time a contract a contract is flipped, the worker loses seniority, benefits and their wage stays at the minimum. There’s no future in this line of work so they look elsewhere. Employee turnover at Pearson has reached 160 per cent so the GTAA introduced standards to a problem it promoted. We want to know what those penalties are because it affects our ability to bargain on behalf of our members.”
