The IAM Local Lodge 1922 Planning Staff at Magellan Aerospace have history on the mind as they move into their new facility at 3160 Derry Road in Mississauga, Ontario.
The building that they’re leaving dates back to the 1950s when it was first constructed by Victory Aircraft, and was the site of the development of the Orenda Iroquois Jet Engine, which was to power the Avro Arrow.
The Conservative government cancelled the Arrow fighter jet and the Iroquois Engine technology was sold off, despite, at the time, the Arrow proving itself as one of the world’s fastest and most advanced aircraft.
The day the project was cancelled, Friday, February 20,1959, became forever known as “Black Friday.”
Victory Aircraft became A.V. Roe, then Hawker-Siddeley, later Orenda Aerospace, and now operates as Magellan Aerospace. IAM Local Lodge 1922 and the Machinists Union have been active part of this history for more than for more 70 years.
