Three Young Machinists committee from IAM Local 2323 visited the IAM Canadian Office yesterday to meet and discuss our common vision. The members, all working in Air Canada Cabin Services, recently joined the LL 2323 Young Machinists Committee. They discussed how to get involved in their union, as well as how to engage other members of the local.
Stan Pickthall, Canadian General Vice-President and Gord Falconer, Chief-of-Staff welcomed and hosted Nicole Tappenden, Shhryl Ramsarran and Kris Baboolal, giving them a tour of the office and introduced the staff.
They later sat down with all staff and discussed their vision of how the committee could help in the hard work of sharing the union’s message. They laid out a framework of how they could reach out to all members, but especially those who were new to the union, notwithstanding their age. They discussed the possibility of renaming the group and calling it the “New Machinists” to capture the spirit of their mandate, without excluding the ongoing work of reaching out to young members.
In turn, Pickthall, Falconer, and other staff shared the work being done by the Canadian office on a national scale to give them a better sense of what the IAM has undertaken for 2020 and beyond.
“It’s so important that younger members engage with the union and learn about the work the IAM does because it shapes their attitude about their workplace and the union that represents them. They are the future of the union and of the movement. They are our most precious resource,” said Pickthall.
If you would like to get involved in your Young Machinists committee or would like to start one up, please contact any member of your Local Executive Committee.
